Explicitly queer representation in Indonesian screens started in 1971 with the release Jang Djatuh di Kaki Lelaki on cinema. Since then, queer characters ebbed and flowed through Indonesian films and TV show. A ban prohibiting depictions of LGBT character from the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission in the mid-2010s, combined with growing conservatism of Indonesian Film Censorship Board, shifted the representation of queer characters to webseries, indie short film, and documentaries.
